Previously known as Biodiversity Action Plan Species (BAP) and often still refered to by this name, they include a huge number of species. Some of which are well known: hedgehogs, harvest mice and Tiger Moth. There are also a huge number of lesser known species and whilst not provided with the same degree of legal protection afforded to European Protected Species or Schedule 5 Species, they are at least in theory supposed to be considered by the LPA.

Species “of principal importance for the purpose of conserving biodiversity” covered under section 41 (England) of the NERC Act (2006) and therefore need to be taken into consideration by a public body when performing any of its functions
